Zinc

Zinc

Zinc is an essential trace mineral required by every cell in the body. It is concentrated in the muscles, bones, skin, kidneys, liver, pancreas, eyes, and the prostate in men. Your body does not produce zinc, it depends on external sources for its supply.

Zinc plays a critical role in hundreds of body processes – from cell growth to immunity – even for taste and smell. It is necessary for the proper functioning of the immune system and helps to protect the body against colds, flu, conjunctivitis and other infections. A study on zinc and colds showed that when people took Zinc at the onset of their illness – they recovered in three days less that those without Zinc. Zinc plays a role in promoting normal growth, the repair of tissue, the healing of wounds and skin irritations.  This makes it useful for acne, burns, eczema, psoriasis, and rosaces, and the health of hair and scalp. Zinc is required for the manufacture of many joint structures. Zinc has also been shown to slow vision loss in people with macular degeneration, a common cause of blindness in people over 50 years of age.

Zinc may also speed the healing of canker sores and sore throat. Zinc may aid in treating more serious illnesses, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia, and possibly multiple sclerosis, as well as other conditions, such as AIDS, which are associated with the improper functioning of the immune system. Zinc has been linked to an enzyme reaction in the brain possibly influencing memory. Typically patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis suffer from low levels of zinc.  Zinc is also a powerful antioxidant. It has been said, “Zinc is touted as a key link to good health.”

Other benefits of Zinc include beneficial effects on various hormones, including the sex and thyroid hormones. It shows promise for enhancing fertility in both women and men. Zinc may also shrink an enlarged prostate. In addition, it may be effective for those with under active thyroid and may improve insulin levels in diabetics. Zinc may also be useful for osteoporosis, hemorrhoids, inflammatory bowel disease and ulcers.
