Taurine

Taurine

Taurine is a conditionally essential amino acid present in high amounts of meat and fish. The most common dietary source of taurine is human breast milk. Excess taurine is excreted by the kidneys. Taurine is involved in better eye activity, bile function, white blood cell antioxidant activity, central nervous system balance, platelet function, heart contractility, sperm motility, growth, insulin activity and maintenance of water and salts in the body.

It is possibly effective in the treatment of congestive heart failure by improving left ventricular function, because it seems to lower blood pressure and balance the nerve impulses. Taurine might also have a cholesterol-lowering effect and seems to be involved in the regulation of calcium in the body.

Taurine has been used for the treatment of congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, seizure disorders and as an anti-oxidant.
