Selenium

Selenium is best known for its biological function as an anti-oxidant and anti-cancer mineral. It is effective when used for total reduction in incidence and cancer mortality in breast, lung, colorectal, and prostate cancer. Data also suggests protection against tumors of the ovaries, cervix, rectum, bladder, esophagus, pancreas, skin, liver, and prostate, as well as against leukemia. It activates an enzyme that protects our cells from this damage by preventing free radical generation. Without selenium, there is an increase in the risk of death from heart disease. Selenium markedly improves acne and seborrheic dermatitis, and arthritis due to its anti-oxidant effects.

Researchers have found an obvious improvement in mental well-being, less fatigue, depression, and anxiety, and more mental alertness, motivation and self-care in people that had adequate selenium in their diet. Selenium has been shown to protect against the toxic effects of mercury, arsenic, and copper. Other studies indicate that selenium deficiency may result in premature aging.
