Magnesium

Magnesium

Magnesium is evolved in energy production, nerve function, muscle contraction and relaxation, enzyme actions, and bone and tooth formation. When magnesium is used with calcium and potassium it regulates heart rhythm and clots blood. It also aids in the production and use of insulin. It is important for the absorption and metabolism of carbohydrates, vitamin B complex and vitamin C as well as proper cell function.

Recent research shows that magnesium is beneficial for the prevention and treatment of heart disease. In areas where the drinking water is hard there is less risk of heart attacks. Magnesium appears to lower blood pressure and has also been found to aid recovery after a heart attack by inhibiting blood clots, widening arteries, and normalizing dangerous arrhythmias. Preliminary studies suggest that adequate intake of magnesium may prevent non-insulin-dependent (type 2) diabetes in some people. These results apply only to Caucasians and not African-Americans.

Since Magnesium relaxes muscles, it is useful for sports injuries and fibromyalgia. It also seems to ease PMS and menstrual cramps, and may increase bone density in postmenopausal women, helping to inhibit the onset of osteoporosis. Magnesium expands airways, which aid in the treatment of asthma and bronchitis.
