Licorice (Roots)

Research finds that licorice boosts immunity, fights viruses, treats ulcers, reduces inflammation, protects the liver, eases menopause and when applied topically will relieve eczema.

Licorice is a time-honored natural treatment for arthritis because of its natural anti-inflammatory properties. The glycyrrhizen in licorice stimulates the adrenal glands to produce certain hormones, reduces inflammation, and increases the levels of interferon (a virus fighting substance manufactured by the immune system). It stimulates the production of two of the body's self-made steroids: aldosterone and cortisone, which help reduce inflammation.

Many herbalists use it as a natural tonic for respiratory problems, peptic ulcers, bladder and kidney ailments. Licorice is helpful for respiratory problems because it fights the viruses that attack the respiratory tract and can relieve cough, sore throat and thins the mucous in this area.

It has also been beneficial in nourishing the adrenal glands and pancreas. Many women also use licorice root as a natural source of the female hormone estrogen. Other compounds in licorice are potent antioxidants and actions that mimic the effects of estrogen in the body. Licorice has antispasmodic, antiinflammatory, expectorant, laxative and soothing properties.

Licorice should be avoided if you have high blood pressure, pregnant, taking diuretics or digitalis. Also, if you have heart, kidney or liver disease. If you have a medical condition, talk to your health professional before taking supplements.
