Dong Quai (Root)

Dong Quai is one of the most important female tonic remedies in Chinese medicine and is used to provide energy and regulate female hormones. The main active ingredient is ligustilide which has been shown to normalize uterine contractions, improve peripheral circulation, relax blood vessels and act as a general blood tonic.

In Traditional Chinese medicine it is used to balance the female hormonal system and is refered to as "female ginseng". Traditionally, it has been used for menstrual and menopausal difficulties. Claims for the herb include balancing the menstrual cycle, correcting abnormal bleeding patterns, alliviating symptoms of PMS, easing menstrual cramps, reducing menopausal hot flashes, improving the vaginal dryness associated with menopause and aids in problems related to peripheral circulation.

Some herbalist believe it contains plant estrogens, which are weaker than estrogens produced by the body but which sill chemically bind with estrogen receptors in human cells. This action may minimize the potential negative effects of a woman's own estrogen, which include an increased risk of adverse female problems.

Although it is not typical to use it for lowering blood pressure, it does have this effect because it dilates blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood through the body. It is also rich in vitamin B-12 and so it may help in building red blood cells.

Common uses include the easing of monthly menstrual cramps and to reduce hot flashes associated with menopause.
