Organic MineralsMarch 2006: Volume 1, Number 3 One bio-component of humic substances is organic minerals. They are also called elements or electrolytes. These minerals are bio-active in this organic material. It is well known that organic minerals function as co-enzymes and enable chemical reactions to occur throughout the body. Nerve impulses can only occur in the presence of minerals. Macro-minerals such as calcium, magnesium and phosphorus form bones. There are many micro-minerals such as iron that enables the transport of oxygen from the lungs to the cells. Macro and micro-minerals can actually become part of the structure of the body in cells, enzymes, hormones, muscles, blood and bone and remain in the body for various amounts of time. Minerals are stored in various parts of the body – primarily in bone and muscle tissue and some are utilized immediately from replenished temporary storage areas. Organic minerals also provide the balancing catalyst to many formulas to increase their effectiveness. The choice and combination of specific organic minerals can help to restore the delicate balance between mind, body and emotions that governs daily performance and efficiency. It is this balance, which makes this product viable in the challenges from day to day, because bodies would cease to function without organic minerals. The vast majority of trace minerals act as coenzymes, which attach to proteins known as enzymes to facilitate chemical reactions throughout the body. They aid in forming bones and other tissues, assist in growth and development, make up part of the genetic material DNA, and help the body burn fats and carbohydrates. Preliminary evidence suggests that minerals are beneficial to the body. An example is calcium which is good for the bones and may be effective against osteoporosis. Calcium along with silicon, manganese helps build strong bones and connective tissue, the durable substance that holds much of the body together. Boron may enhance bone health by preventing calcium loss and activating the bone-maintaining hormone estrogen, whereas vanadium seems to stimulate bone-building enzymes. In addition to strengthening bones, manganese is part of the enzyme super oxide dismutase (SOD) – a potent anti-oxidant that protects the cells throughout the body. Some evidence indicates that manganese may also benefit people with epilepsy by reducing seizures. Silicon may be useful in guarding against heart disease by concentrating this mineral in the vessel walls, which can reduce the risk to this problem. Silicon strengthens connective tissue and can also nourish hair, skin and nails. Molybdenum helps the body use its stores of iron and assists in the burning of fat for energy. Vanadium may be beneficial for diabetes, because it can enhance the effects of the hormone insulin that regulates blood sugar. Research has been done on some minerals to determine body functions and resolve toxic problems. We will talk about elements or electrolytes in the body in subsequent publications here. |
