Cell Repair to the Rescue: Autoimmune Diseases

November 2011: Vol 6 No 11

Autoimmune diseases are the result of cellular treason, which causes chronic inflammatory immune complexes. These complexes cause damage to cells, tissues and body organ systems which are critical to health and vitality.

Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system reacts against self-antigens and destroys host tissues in the many systems of the body such as those listed here:

Endocrine System – High levels of homocysteine is strongly associated with early miscarriage and birth defects even if the baby does survive and come to full term such as neural tube defects. These defects leave the baby deformed, paralyzed or even dead. Oral contraceptives reduce methylation and can cause a higher incidence of vascular disease and a susceptibility to early menopause. Menopause is caused by a reduction of hormones (estrogen and progesterone), which is caused by a reduction in the methylation to produce these hormones.

Skin – Skin manifestations are very uncomfortable and many of them cause pain and disfigurement. The skin becomes thin and translucent, causing loss of skin pigmentation and mottled skin color. The skin can become course and inflexible. It is the methylation that keeps the skin soft and pliable with that youthful look. Low methylation can also cause grey hair that can lower that youthful look.

Neuromuscular – Multiple Sclerosis is caused by the destruction of the myelin sheath, which wraps around and insulates the nerves. This inhibits normal nerve action potentials from being fine tuned impulses. Myelin is the basic protein that maintains the integrity of the nerves to send the right messages at the right time throughout our bodies. Methylation is essential for the repair of myelin sheaths. Fibromyalgia is caused by a reduction in the myelin structures.

GI System – Ulcerative Colitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that causes ulceration of the colonic mucosa, usually in the rectum and sigmoid colon. There are significant immunologic factors associated with this disease. It is the lymphocytes that have shown cytotoxic effects on the epithelial cells of the colon, as well damage caused by other cytokines, tumor necrosis factor, toxic oxygen radicals and other autoimmune problems. Pernicious anemia is the most common type of megaloblastic anemia associated with the end stage of type A chronic atrophic (autoimmune) gastritis. Pernicious means highly injurious or destructive.

Eye – The damage to the lacrimal glands causes the dry eyes that is so often seen in older people. Also, another affliction is cataracts. Cataracts are caused in part by oxidative and photo damage to the eye lens. It is the low concentrations of methyl units and methylation that lead to partial or complete blindness. Macular Degeneration is another example.

Connective Tissue – Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which your immune system attacks your own body. In war it is called “friendly fire”. This is caused by a decline in the methylation of the immune system cells called lymphocytes, among which are the T-Cells. T-Cells are maintained by DNA methylation of the lymphocytes. There is a link between lupus and heart disease that can result in heart attacks.

You can see that methylation is an absolute factor in reducing the autoimmune responses in many areas. A diet that supports strong methylating factors in the body will be an asset to any healthy life style.

We will discuss in our next lecture some diseases that may be helped by providing a methylation diet.
