Zinc [Zn] – Zinc is a structural and functional component of over 20 enzymes associated with many different metabolic processes. The highest concentration is in the eyes, liver, bones, prostate, semen, and hair. The most critical role is in the synthesis of RNA and DNA, which are essential for cell division, cell repair, and cell growth. In the eye, zinc activates vitamin A and is a factor in night vision, color discrimination, reduced cataract formation, and decreased inflammation of the optic nerve. Zinc helps curb upper respiratory infections, regulates better diabetic control, assists in smell and taste, has then ability to heal wounds faster, increases the bone density, and boosts the immune system.
Zinc is a part of superoxide dismutase (SOD), an antioxidant enzyme responsible to combat free radicals. It also has the ability to help in conditions such as acne, burns, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, alopecia areata, leg ulcers, anorexia nervosa, reduce the size of the prostate and lower prolactin, a pituitary hormone, when it is elevated above normal. It may be useful for osteoporosis, hemorrhoids, inflammatory bowel disease and ulcers.
