The Specific Uses of Minerals or Elements in the Body – Chromium

April 2008: Volume 3 Number 4

Chromium [Cr] The highest concentrations of this mineral are found in the hair, spleen, kidneys, and testes with lower concentrations in the heart, pancreas, lungs, and brain. Chromium is the major mineral involved in insulin production. It has been shown that trivalent chromium acts with insulin in promoting the utilization of glucose resulting in a more normal glucose metabolism. Chromium is essential for the breakdown of protein, fat, and carbohydrates and may lower total blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels as well as helping in weight loss efforts.

We will discuss Boron (B) mineral in our next lecture as a continuation of the specific uses of minerals or element in our bodies.
