Selenium [Se] – Selenium is concentrated most in the kidneys, liver, spleen, pancreas and testes. Selenium acts as an antioxidant, blocking free radicals that can damage DNA. It is part of an enzyme called glutathione peroxidase that protects cells against environmental and dietary toxins. It is used with vitamins C and E that potentates its antioxidant activity to guard against a variety of disorders such as cancer, heart disease, cataracts, macular degeneration, strokes and even aging.
Cornell University and the University of Arizona conducted studies on cancer patients. This research showed that those with lower selenium levels develop tumors, and had a higher rate of disease with spreading cancers. Selenium also decreases the risk of clotting which lowers cholesterol, heart attack and stroke. Laboratory animals with a selenium deficiency developed liver necrosis, striking pallor, and degeneration of skeletal muscle (white muscle disease) and occasionally heart problems. There is some evidence that selenium may also prove effective in the treatment of acne, seborrheic dermatitis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
We will discuss Chromium (Cr) mineral in our next lecture as a continuation of the specific uses of minerals or element in our bodies.
